As the holiday season winds up Mr. Vegas is counting blessings, as his was a summer filled with extraordinary success. Far from being a stroke of luck, Mr.Vegas earned every triumphant minute that saw his songs soaring up charts while he remained in high demand for stage appearances.

Infectious and new, his dance tune “Round of Applause” came on the underground scene with a vengeance and is currently making serious waves. Response to the tune, that includes not only raving reviews, but also genuine crowd appreciation by dancehall fans, has inspired Mr. Vegas and his team to produce a “Round of Applause” video.

ZEBRA TO BE RELEASED THIS WEEKEND

Having been convicted in November 2001 of one count of rape and sentenced to a total of 10 years in prison for not only that rape, but also assault at common-law, indecent assault and breaching probation, dancehall DJ Zebra will be walking home free this coming weekend.

Zebra, whose voice bears a striking similarity to veteran dancehall great Tiger, rose to fame in the early 1990’s with hits like: “Picture Frame,” “Hype Type of Love,” “Redder Than Red.’ “Rupert” and “Dem Unfair Eh-No.”

Not even a decade later his demise became imminent as a string of offensive behaviors thrust him on the wrong side of the law. Reports ascribe Zebra’s misfortune that resulted in arrests, to his floundering career at the time.

His first serious brush with the law came after he reportedly beat his then girlfriend Sherilla Williams, following an argument at their Oakland apartment; which resulted in an assault of common-law charge being placed on him.

Zebra followed that one with an October 2000 incident where he reportedly fondled a 15 year-old girl, then tried having sex with her forcibly.

The DJ topped it off with what has been described as full fledged rape, when he allegedly used his trusted position as a route taxi driver to take an 18 year old university student into bushes near Barry, St Catherine, where he sexually assaulted her.

There will be a concert and party in Tawes Pen, St Catherine to celebrate Zebra’s release from prison after having been incarcerated for seven and a half years. Zebra became eligible for parole on March 5, 2005, but was required to stay in prison until his earliest possible release date, which is September 6, 2008.

As an fundamental element in his campaign to promote Safe Sex, Vybz Kartel has gone into the business of churning out condoms.

The brand name of the dancehall genius’ condoms is “Daggering” and they will surely live up to their name, as the three pack condom sets will be manufactured and tested to US FDA standards.

The release of this new venture comes on the heels of “Vybz Rum” that was also recently launched.

Kartel, who spearheads the Portmore Music Empire will have “Daggering Condoms” packaged in Jamaica and marketed there as well, through a private company.

The second annual staging of Jah Cure’s CureFest has been put on hold. This move comes as a result of the numerous overseas engagements the artiste has. Since the staging of CureFest in October 2007, Jah Cure’s career has grown by leaps and bounds and for the last six months Cure has been touring consistently.

Delmar Drummond, CEO Danger Promotions, explained the decision: “The demand for Jah Cure is extremely high right now. So many promoters from all over the world have been requesting him to perform. We decided to venture to Europe to give him more exposure there. Unfortunately the dates of the Europe tour coincide with the dates proposed for CureFest 2008. We are hoping that we still may be able to host CureFest after the Europe tour but we cannot be sure just yet. If not, we will definitely schedule it for next year as we are committed to making CureFest a calendar event in Jamaica. We apologize for all Cure fans who looked forward to CureFest this year.”

CureFest 2007 was the 3-day event staged between Friday October 12 and Sunday October 14, and began with Jah Cure’s birthday celebration dubbed Reflections at the Starfish Hotel. This was followed by 45 Cure’s on Saturday October 13 at Pier 1, Montego Bay where Radio DJ’s and sound systems came out to show their support. The event climaxed with the Longing For concert at the Trelawny Multi-Purpose Stadium on Sunday, October 14 where Jah Cure performed a full set for the 1st time in Jamaica in 8 years. Jah Cure will however, perform on Sumfest Reggae Night, Friday July 18 in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

This June Jah Cure will begin his first full European Tour. This will be the biggest tour Jah Cure has done to-date and will take him to all the major cities in Europe including states in Scandinavia.

The promoters of CureFest are assuring fans that when CureFest returns it will be bigger and better than its inaugural staging.

ETANA - THE STRONG ONE

Etana’s fourth video for her single “Don’t Forget” from her eagerly anticipated album, “The Strong One”, will be shot in Hope Gardens and Villa Ronai on June 17. The video will be directed by no other than Winston ‘Tyson’ Mayhew.

Etana is also scheduled to perform at Jamrock Reggae Fest at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York.

She will begin a 5 week tour of Europe on June 18. She will visit Cardiff, Wales, London, Birmingham, Manchester (England), Zurich, Switzerland, Brussells (Belgium), Rome (Italy) and Barcelona and Milan (Spain).

Etana will return to Jamaica on July 19 for Reggae Sumfest in Montego Bay, St. James.
